Usher puts personal troubles behind him

LONDON (AP) ? Usher's had a turbulent few months, but now he's back where he belongs ? on stage.

On Saturday, the R&B singer kicks off the iTunes Festival in London, a month's worth of free shows at the Roundhouse.

Over the summer, Usher coped with the death of his stepson and a custody battle over his two sons, which he won.

He took time out to deal with these challenges, all while his fans were desperate for him to perform again.

Usher jokes: "Man, it's like 'shut up and entertain, we don't care about your personal stuff.'"

He adds, however, that his fans gave him support on Twitter during the tough times, proving their loyalty.

The iTunes 2012 Festival line-up also includes One Direction, Lana Del Rey, Muse and Alicia Keys.

Beltre's 4 hits help Rangers beat Indians

CLEVELAND (AP) - Adrian Beltre had four hits and scored twice to help the Texas Rangers beat Cleveland 5-3 Friday night, handing the reeling Indians their sixth straight loss.

Beltre had three of his hits off Ubaldo Jimenez (9-14) as the Rangers rolled to their 10th win in 13 games.

The Indians' 15th loss in 16 games made them 5-24 in August, tying the team record for losses in one month, set in July 1914. Cleveland is 5-28 since July 27.

Ryan Dempster (4-1) gave up two hits and one unearned run in six innings. Joe Nathan got the final two outs for his 28th save in 29 chances and 26th in a row.

Rangers right fielder Nelson Cruz was ejected for slamming his bat on the plate in the seventh after his third strikeout.

Beltre had two doubles and two singles in five times up. His only out came on a diving catch by left fielder Jason Donald in the ninth. The third baseman has hit .472 (17 for 36) with 14 RBIs in his last nine games. In his last 68 games, Beltre has batted .334 with 15 homers and 45 RBIs.

The Indians are as frigid as Beltre has been torrid, dropping to 11-36 in the second half. Cleveland has hit just .194 with runners in scoring position over that time and their starting rotation's 6.47 ERA during that span is the worst in the majors.

Manager Manny Acta, whose job falls further into jeopardy with each loss, shook up Cleveland's lineup in an effort to manufacture some offense. He reinstated Shin-Soo Choo into the leadoff spot, dropping Jason Kipnis and Asdrubal Cabrera one spot each to second and third.

"You've got to die trying, man," Acta said before the game.

The Indians did just that against Dempster, who was perfect before issuing a one-out walk to Jack Hannahan in the third. Santana broke up the no-hitter with an RBI single in the fourth, when shortstop Elvis Andrus made two errors.

Andrus went 1 for 5. He has hit safely in all 27 of his career games against Cleveland.

Jimenez made 31 pitches in the first inning, but escaped by allowing only one run, on Beltre's RBI single.

Two innings later, his pitch count at 78, Jimenez trailed 3-0 after Michael Young and David Murphy had consecutive RBI singles in the third.

Ian Kinsler's two-out RBI single on Jimenez's season-high 117th pitch made it 4-1 in the sixth.

The right-hander gave up eight hits, four runs and three walks. Though he struck out seven, he also dropped to 1-7 with 7.79 ERA in 10 starts since the All-Star break.

Young singled home Beltre in the seventh against reliever Esmil Rogers.

Dempster, who was only 5-5 despite a sparkling 2.25 ERA in 16 starts for the Cubs, is enjoying great run support in Texas. The Rangers lead the majors with 675 runs, and have scored 31 in Dempster's 37 1-3 innings since he was acquired on July 31 from the Chicago Cubs. He had not faced Cleveland since 2006, when he worked in relief for the Cubs.

Santana doubled and scored on Casey Kotchman's 12th homer, off Koji Uehara in the ninth.

Alarm Clock Wars: Birthdays and anniversaries

The end of August is a busy celebration time for us. Our third wedding anniversary was last week and Farmer Doc?s birthday was earlier this week. Why did we schedule our wedding so close to his birthday, you might ask?

Believe it or not, we scheduled our wedding to be after fair season, but before college football season. And with a 3-week state fair in August and Purdue football starting the first weekend in September, we weren?t left with a lot of options!

(Seriously, that?s why.)

It?s all about priorities.

This year we built our new (and improved!) house and moved in late in April. We finished up the last few things that needed to be finished over the next month or so (well, almost all of the last few things). Then we jumped right into fair season. Summer is always busy for us with fairs and traveling (especially this year), and finally we throw in two important celebrations at the end to round it out.

We do usually celebrate our birthdays and anniversaries with small gifts. And for the last two years we have gotten away for a long weekend to celebrate our anniversary. This year, we decided that the new house was the birthday presents for both of us. And since at least one of us was gone part of every week in July and August, we decided to stay home for our anniversary.

That?s not really true. We didn?t decide to stay home, we decided not to take a vacation. I didn?t stay home at all ? I went to the Indiana Farm Bureau Delegate Session in Indianapolis to talk policy for part of that weekend.

So I?m a little torn here. The presents don?t bother me. Trust me, this house is present enough! But we skipped our new tradition of a long weekend in a Kentucky state park.

We saved some money, sure (and that will come in handy to pay for this new house!). But part of the point of going away for those few days was to get away from ?regular? life and have a chance to reconnect. And we didn?t get to do that in the same way this year. We did go to San Diego earlier in the summer for the AVMA convention, but that felt more like work than ?quality time.?

How do you celebrate big events like birthdays and anniversaries? DO you celebrate them? Are planned vacations (even mini-vacations) important to maintaining your relationship, or do you find ways to keep that connection during ?regular? life?

Homemade Whole Wheat Pita Bread & Pita Chips | tHis family tree ...

One of my fondest memories of food that we ate when growing up is pita sandwiches filled with turkey breast, lettuce, tomatoes, and Italian dressing. So, when a friend sent me an email that contained a recipe for homemade pita bread, I was surprised that I might could do this myself at home. And, with freshly ground ingredients, making it actually good for us. It has been a really neat recipe that is fun to have the kids help with and I can see all of my children right now in my mind?s eye, the first time we made them they were sitting in front of the oven watching through the glass as the pitas ?magically? began to puff and rise. It takes all of 3-5 minutes to bake them and even less to eat them!

Keith will tell you that it is his favorite way to eat a sandwich. He likes it even better than loaf bread. If you have extra leftover, then brush with a little olive oil and salt and make some pita chips like described below.

Homemade Whole Wheat Pita Bread and Pita Chips
recipe adapted from Smitten Kitchen

3 1/4 cup whole wheat flour (freshly ground preferably)
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons yeast
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 1/4- 1 1/2 cup water (room temperature)

Combine all ingredients in a stand mixer. With the paddle attachment, mix on low speed just until all flour is moistened, about 20 seconds. Change to the dough hook and raise speed to medium and knead for 10 minutes. The dough should clean the bowl and be very soft and smooth and just a little sticky o the touch. Add a little flour or water if necessary.

Let the dough rise (about and hour or so). Scrape dough into large bowl, lightly greased with oil. Press dough down and lightly oil top of it. Cover container with lid or plastic wrap.

Preheat oven to 475. One hour before baking. Have an oven shelf at lowest level and place baking stone, cast iron skillet, or baking sheet on it before preheating.

Shape dough into log and cut into 8-12 pieces. Work with one at a time, keeping rest covered with a damp cloth. On lightly floured surface, shape each into a ball and then flatten into a disk. Cover dough with oiled plastic and allow to rest for 20 minutes.

Roll each disk into a circle a little under 1/4 inch thick. Allow them to rest uncovered for about 10 minutes before baking (make sure the dough is loose on floured surface or it will stick and be difficult to lift and place onto baking sheet)

Bake the pita. Quickly place 1 piece of dough directly on stone and bake for 3-4 minutes. Pita should completely puff but not brown.

Bake 3 or 4 at a time. Transfer pitas to clean towel to stay soft and warm. Allow oven to rest 5 minutes between batches. The pitas can be reheated for about 30 seconds in a hot oven before serving.

If you are having trouble with them puffing, try spritzing the discs with a little water 3-4 minutes before baking. It is important that the dough is moist.

Pita Chips
Brush pita with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Cut like a pizza into 4-6 pieces. Lay on baking stone in a 375 degree oven. Bake 12-15 minutes. Bake time will depend on thickness of pita. Keep and eye on it.

Great to snack on and also to dip with.
