Smooth Fitness Review Update | Diary of a Chic Mommy | A Curvy ...

A few weeks ago I blogged about my new Smooth Fitness Treadmill & My Weightloss Journey?and I wanted to give a brief update on how things are coming thus far. I have been doing my best to become the most familiar with my machine and I think I haven?t quite nailed it as of yet. I have tried a few of the programs that are offered on the treadmill, but some of them are very challenging and haven?t worked in my favor. I?m sure I could get a great workout using them properly, but it?s something that I will have to build up to and gradually add over time. I will say that this machine is very quiet even while sprinting or running. I also experienced having to using the emergency feature because I slipped while sprinting on the machine yesterday. This is a great feature because an accident can happen to anyone and if you have the emergency clip on your clothes properly it will stop the machine completely which will prevent you from injuring yourself.

I also have an elliptical and now a treadmill and I will admit that the treadmill is by far my top pick simply because it?s easier on my knees especially being that I suffer pain in my right knee from time to time due to an injury that happened a few years back. I will admit that this week has been a bit rough for me because my family and I will be leaving for Disney World on Sundy, but I have been working out double time to get in more than enough workouts on the treadmill because I?m so determined to get this weight off.?I forgot to mention that I appreciate the fact that this treadmill has a fan especially right now in the summer months here in San Antonio and also the fact that my little home gym is located upstairs which means the heat rises, but the fan definitely is a PLUS!

I attempted using the?My Smooth Fitness Virtual Training and I believe if used properly (yes I?m guilty) can be ?a great tool to your work out regime because it allows you to manage your workouts in more details.?Wherever you go, you can access mySMOOTH. Anytime, Anywhere online internet accessibility allows you to stay connected.?Using a whole person wellness approach, mySMOOTH virtual fitness trainer combines health and fitness program and management into one, easy to use, online solution that is simple, intuitive, and affordable! Business Advertising Directories ? SMB Advice & Tips

Online business advertising directories are an essential part of building and maintaining your small business? online presence. Not only do these directories help increase exposure, business directories can add relevancy to your site which is vital for search engine ranking.

There is a wide range of online advertising directories. Some offer free submissions, others charge fees. Some are designed as general directories; others are industry or location specific. A concentrated effort to list your business in multiple directories is a low cost way to gain online exposure.

The advantages of listing your business in as many directories as possible go beyond increased exposure to potential customers. Incoming links to your web site are of critical importance when it comes to search engine rankings. Search engines, like Google, place significant emphasis on link popularity, or the number of outside links pointing to your web site. Business directory listings play an important role in increasing incoming links.

Many directory listings allow customers to rate and review their experiences with your business. While this can be a two-edged sword, positive reviews and comments can greatly increase your customer base. If someone posts a negative experience, most directory sites allow a rebuttal, giving you the perfect opportunity to regain goodwill, address the submitters issue, and show other potential customers that you are committed to quality and customer satisfaction.

Of course, increased exposure is one of the main advantages of using a variety of business directories. It stands to reason that the more directories in which your business listing appears, the more people will be drawn to your web site.

There are three main types of business directories. They are:

GeneralRegionalIndustry Specific

General business advertising directories list businesses in all industries, specializations, and regions. Most general business directories offer free listings and differing levels of more prominent sponsored listing options. Examples of general business advertising directories include:

Business.com ? Business.com is a general business site dedicated to providing business information, how-to articles, directories, and additional resources. Directories match customers with needed services and products. Free listings, pay-per-click, and banner advertising levels are available.

RichDir.com ? Rich?s business directories provide a wealth of business information as well as business listings. Listings are submitted by business owners and reviewed for acceptance. Premium listings are available.

Best of the Web ? Best of the Web is one of the oldest directory sites. Not a business specific direction, they feature general, blog, and local directories, business owners may create their own listing, upload photos, and take advantage of a free get started option.

DMOZ ? DMOZ, or the Open Directory Project, is a large, comprehensive, human-edited web directory. A global community of volunteers maintains and constructs the directories. All listings, including those for business, are free.

Regional directories list businesses in specific geographical locations. Most regional directories break local businesses into industry categories and encourage customer reviews. Many regional directories offer business owners the opportunity to announce events, create coupons, monitor visitor traffic, and contact customers privately. Some of the currently popular regional business advertising directories include:

Yelp ? Yelp offers free listings for business owners and managers. ?Yelpers? rate and review various types of businesses, from restaurants to pet sitters. Yelp encourages users to socialize using online chatting and community tools.

Google Places ? Google Places offers free business listings with some advanced features. Photos, coupons, directions, and more can be included in a Google Places listing. Listing with Google Places improves your visibility in Google search listings and on Google Maps.

Yellow Pages ? A popular destination for consumers, Yellow Pages offers a free basic business listing and various paid options.

Yellow Book ? Yellow Book is another popular local search directory for consumers. Yellow Book offers a wide variety of free and premium tools for business owners.

CitySlick.net ? CitySlick.net offers a free service and various levels of premium features, including video promotions and classified ads.

Industry-related business advertising directories focus on a specific business type. Consumers looking for a competent attorney, for example, enter their zip code in a web site search field and receive a listing of nearby professionals. Some industry directories provide contact forms for each listing so that potential clients may contact the business professional directly.

Other useful types of business directories include listings with your local Chamber of Commerce, professional organizations, and local media web sites.

Flu immunity is affected by how many viruses actually cause the infection

New research published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology suggests that the immune response differs depending on the amount of virus received during infection

Bethesda, MDNot only does the type of flu virus affect a patient's outcome, but a new research report appearing in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology suggests that the number of viruses involved in the initial infection may be important too. Scientists from Canada found that when mice were infected by relatively high concentrations of the flu virus, they not only developed immunity against the virus that infected them, but this also promoted the generation of a type of immune cell in the lungs poised to rapidly react against infections with other strains of the flu, as well. Mice that were infected with a relatively low concentration of the virus developed weaker immunity against the strain that infected them, did not build up this crucial population of immune cells in the lungs, and showed only delayed immunity toward other flu strains. This discovery could pave the way for new prophylactic strategies to fight flu infections and provides a novel basis for vaccine design.

"Hopefully, the findings of our study will help to develop better vaccine preparations that will be more effective in inducing protective cellular immunity to fight against infectious pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and fungi," said Martin V. Richter, Ph.D., the lead researcher involved in the work from the Department of Medicine at the Universit de Sherbrooke and Centre de Recherche Clinique tienne-Le Bel in Qubec, Canada.

To make this discovery, scientists infected two groups of mice with two different infectious doses of influenza A (H3N2) and analyzed several aspects of inflammation and immunity during the initial infection as well as during reinfection with a different strain of virus. The first group was infected with a low dose of the virus whereas the second group was infected with a high dose of the same virus. Mice infected with the high dose showed increased morbidity, a greater degree of lung inflammation, but also a greater recruitment of influenza-specific immune cells (CD8+ T cells) into their lungs, and a better generation of long-lived respiratory CD8+ T cells called memory CD8+ T cells. In contrast, the mice infected with the low dose of virus suffered less from primary infection but all of the immune responses were induced to lower levels. Consequently, reinfection of mice, 60 days after primary infection, revealed that mice previously infected with a higher dose showed increased protection due to greater magnitude of the memory CD8+ T cell pool present in their lungs before reinfection. This is the first demonstration that the initial infectious dose has an important impact on the generation of specific types of immune memory cells and on the degree of immune protection against reinfection.

"Recent experience with emerging and mutating strains of influenza virus highlight how very few changes in this virus could lead to a catastrophic flu crisis," said John Wherry, Ph.D., Deputy Editor of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology. "While considerable efforts have been invested in predicting new emerging flu strains for our yearly vaccines, it is impossible to prepare for every possible way the flu can mutate. This new research shows that it may be possible to enhance current vaccines to offer broader protection against different flu strains, known and unknown."

Chinese national charged with smuggling counterfeit Marlboro cigarettes worth $1M-plus into US

A Chinese national is facing charges that he smuggled more than $1 million worth of counterfeit Marlboro cigarettes into the United States, federal authorities in Rhode Island said Friday.

Lin Xiao Wei is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday in U.S. District Court in Providence. Federal prosecutors say Wei has been in federal custody since June 4, when he was arrested in Miami. He is charged with selling and dispensing a counterfeit tobacco product and fraudulently importing a counterfeit tobacco product.

An affidavit filed in court detailing the accusations against the 32-year-old Wei also alleges he discussed dealing in counterfeit Viagra and claimed that his associates purchased the mold for a soon-to-be released Nike sneaker. The affidavit says because of the purchase, counterfeit versions of the shoe would be available for sale before the sneaker made it to U.S. stores.

A message left Friday for Wei's public defender wasn't immediately returned.

Federal agents began investigating Wei, who is also known as Marvin, in February, according to an affidavit signed by John A'Vant, a lieutenant with the Rhode Island state police who also serves on a task force organized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Office of Criminal Investigations.

Authorities used a confidential source who arranged a deal with Wei and met with him in Dubai and Miami, A'Vant wrote.

On Feb. 10, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives used an undercover business entity to wire $56,150 to a bank account in Hong Kong tied to Wei, A'Vant wrote.

The money was a half payment for a 20-foot container of counterfeit Marlboro cigarettes, A'Vant wrote. In total, the government paid more than $136,000 for the cigarettes, shipping and customs fees, the affidavit said.

The cigarettes were shipped from China in a container that claimed to hold 696 cartons of leather products that were bound for Rhode Island, according to the office of Rhode Island U.S. Attorney Peter F. Neronha.

The container arrived on April 27 in Miami, where federal agents found 17 pallets of cigarettes inside labeled as Marlboro, A'Vant wrote. Investigators sent a sampling of cigarettes to the parent company of Marlboro cigarettes manufacturer Phillip Morris International Inc. of Richmond, Va., for testing. The testing found that the cigarettes weren't real Marlboro cigarettes, A'Vant wrote.

Wei arrived in New York on May 28 and later met with the confidential source and an undercover law enforcement officer in a hotel room in Miami on June 3, A'Vant wrote.

During the meeting, which was recorded without Wei's knowledge, Wei said he was visiting the United States for the first time and was concerned about being discovered by the FBI, A'Vant wrote.

During the conversation, the undercover officer discussed buying more counterfeit cigarettes as well as counterfeit Viagra from Wei, A'Vant wrote. By the time Wei arrived in the U.S., federal agents had already wired him $9,450 to purchase about 900 counterfeit Viagra tablets, according to the affidavit. Wei told the officer he had previously shipped counterfeit Viagra to the U.S. and London, A'Vant wrote.

During that same meeting, Wei also said his associates spent $200,000 to purchase the mold of a Nike sneaker that was about to be released and planned to make a counterfeit version of the shoe available before it went up for sale in U.S. stores.

The Evolution of the Convertible

Summer is officially here, and with it comes dreams of open-air motoring. Whether it's enjoying a lazy drive on a winding two-lane or cruising to a local drive-in, summer and convertibles go together like lemonade and ice tea.

Today, the market expects the hottest cars to come in a roadster variant, whether you're looking at a fire-breathing Lamborghini Gallardo or a polite Volkswagen Eos. But it wasn't always like this. How did the droptop become the body style of summer? To uncover the answers, we track the evolution of wind-in-your-hair driving back more than a century.

Indie workers: Is self-employment the new norm?

Facing a sluggish economy where jobs aren't as secure, A growing number of US workers are foregoing traditional employment to strike out on their own. Some left the workforce for more flexibility, while others were forced into self-employment by an uncertain job market.

By Margaret Price,?Correspondent / June 25, 2012

Customer service representatives for CSN Stores help customers over the phones in Boston in this 2010 file photo. Motivated by factors like the unstable job market and a desire for more flexibility, more and more workers are foregoing the traditional job security in offices like these to become self-employed or temporary workers.

More people are trying to create their own work," she says. "They want to follow their passion and work on their own schedule."

Even at a time when a sluggish economy is causing many Americans to look for more job security, a large number of workers are striking out on their own. By one estimate, there are 16 million "career independent workers."

Although experts disagree on the size of the cohort, their numbers do appear to be increasing. The move seems to be a confluence of three trends: workers, especially professionals, seeking more flexibility; technology that makes it easier for them to set up shop; and corporations looking to avoid hiring full-time employees at a time when business cycles are shorter than normal.

"Executives want to be able to ratchet [operations] up and down" in step with "real-time changes in the economy," says Carl Camden, president and chief executive officer of Kelly Services, a large temporary staffing company based in Troy, Mich.

That can require "adjustments to employment, as well as inventory and acquisition of raw materials," he says.

About 44 percent of workers in the United States are already "free agents" ? people working on their own behalf, he estimates. By the end of this decade, he says they'll represent about 50 percent of the workforce. Mr. Camden predicts that newly minted independent workers will most likely be from areas like IT ? information technology.

In turn, more people are seeking greater work-life flexibility. They also want more say in their work and a greater variety of assignments, and through technology and social media, they can access more opportunities.

"Technology has accelerated people's ability to work independently," says Gene Zaino, CEO of MBO Partners, a provider of back-office support to independent consultants.

Most of the existing 16 million independent workers are experts or knowledge workers, and include people who work through temporary staffing agencies or those who own a business with fewer than five employees, says MBO Partners, based in Herndon, Va. It projects that the ranks of such workers will hit some 20 million next year and 70 million by 2020 ? or about half the private, nongovernment workforce.

Not everyone believes such forecasts.

A Latter-day Voice: Teaching in FHE

We have a long-standing rule in our home. Lessons in Family Home Evening may not last longer than 10 minutes.

Actually it?s not so much a rule as just the way things are. But we articulated it several years ago when Elder Perry mentioned in a stake conference that his children?s FHE lessons were a minute or two long because that?s all their kids would sit still for. (Elder Bednar promulgated a similar notion in his famous ?He?s breathing my air!? talk. And Elder Holland enshrined the flexibility of FHE forever in his reference to Belamites.)

We have seven children who range in age from 11-31. As a result of that wide spread of ages we?ve had to be pretty flexible in our approach to Home Evening lessons. Interestingly, it?s not the littlest kids we?ve had a hard time keeping engaged, it?s the surly teenagers. Some have just been bored at anything that doesn?t come out of an electronic device. Others have resisted FHE because of various stages of testimony doubt. But we?ve been fortunate. Most of our kids, most of the time, have been willing to be at least civil for a ten minute lesson.

That?s not to say our Family Home Evenings are limited to ten minutes. We try to keep the family in ?home evening? mode from dinner through family prayer. In addition to the lesson, we sing, we play a game, we have a treat (still the all-time favorite part of FHE, especially for the person who gets to pick the treat!), and we have our weekly calendaring session.

When we teach, of course we mix up who teaches (we have one of those FHE charts with moveable pieces for each of us; with fewer kids at home now than then, we simply skip some of the assignments on the chart ? now the person on lesson also conducts, and we don?t do a spotlight anymore (though during his senior year, one of our sons loved that assignment ? he would always spotlight some organism he was learning about in his environmental biology class)).

When my 11-year old daughter teaches, she likes to use PowerPoint or a favorite Mormon Messages video. (I will often still help her prepare her lessons.) I like to use videos, too, including excerpts of conference talks. My son favors basing his lessons on an article from one of the church magazines (often the same article he?s used for our home teaching lessons?go figure). My wife and I both like to have the kids digging in their scriptures. That said, most lessons are short and to the point. There?s discussion involving everyone. And we try to reinforce whatever the teacher of the evening is trying to teach.

After April conference, my wife and I reviewed together which talks had messages we thought our family ought to hear again, and we often refer back to that list of talks when we teach. And recently in my personal prayers I?ve felt a strong pull to teach doctrine to my kids rather than behavior.

My own experience has taught me that regular family home evening is not a guarantee that our children will choose the way we would like them to all the time. But I do believe that it has helped our family stay close together. I treasure that time together with my wife and children.

In fact, I treasure that family time so much that we actually have three family nights a week most weeks. Of course we have traditional Family Home Evening on Mondays. But Sunday night (when there is not a youth fireside) is also family time ? we play board games between dinner and bedtime. And so is Friday night, when we always have pizza (almost always homemade) and a movie. (Nope: Friday is NOT date night for my lovely wife and me; that?s Saturday.) Even when I was bishop, or when I have been my busiest at work, I did my very best to keep those times available for my family and me to be together.

What works in your FHE?

BIS backs banking union to ease euro zone crisis

Reuters | June 24, 2012 | 10:04 AM EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Creating a banking union for the euro zone could break the fever gripping the shared currency and buy time for governments to put the euro on a viable long-term footing, the Bank for International Settlements said on Sunday.

The endorsement by the BIS, a global forum for central banks, will add momentum to proposals for a single supervisor for big euro area banks, pan-European deposit insurance and a fund to wind down cross-border lenders in trouble.

The ideas will be discussed at a European Union summit in Brussels on June 28/29, the 19th such meeting to try to quell the euro zone's 2-1/2-year-old debt and banking crisis.

The crisis is complicated by the interdependence of heavily indebted governments and the banks that help to finance them by buying their bonds. Germany, the EU's paymaster, is opposed to asking its taxpayers to backstop other countries' banks.

"If adopted, these measures will break the adverse feedback between the banks and the sovereign and other destructive links that are making the crisis so severe," the BIS, based in Basel, Switzerland, said in its annual report.

Common banking rules would shore up confidence in the euro because depositors would no longer have a reason to flee lenders they fear might fail, the BIS said. Greek banks have lost about 30 percent of their deposits since the start of 2010.

College Students Open New Grocery Delivery Business

Williamsville, N.Y. - They're your typical college students with dreams and aspirations. Eric Bress and Robert Purkiss are not only childhood friends, but are now brand new business partners.

This week they launched Grocery Express Buffalo, a service where customers can place their grocery shopping list on their website.

Bress told 2 On Your Side that they will not only do the shopping for you, they will also deliver it to your door.?

"It's been very successful in other areas of the country and we want to test it out here. We think it would be great for this area," said Bress.

Wal-Mart is one such store that offers "grocery to go service," but it's not available yet in Western New York. Grocery Express Buffalo actually offers something unique compared to others.

"You can select the exact time you want your delivery which is unique from other places where there's some leeway in the time," said Bress.

Before attending Penn State, Bress took an entrepreneurial class in high school. He said this same business venture was his actual final project. A few weeks ago he shared this idea with Purtkiss who attends U-B.

"It give me the experience, and its good fun to do. We're having a great time doing it and I really like the feeling of being an entrepreneur," said Purkiss.

With three deliveries under their belt so far, the new partners are trying to build their business by marketing themselves to those who they feel are a forgotten customer base.

Bress elaborated by saying, "We think our main group of customers is the elderly. We've gone around actually to a lot of retirement homes and are trying to get possibly like a drop box system where the residents can write in their orders."

Orders Purkiss said will meet the highest of standards.

"If it's something I'll put in my fridge at home, and will eat myself then I'll choose one 10-times better than that and give it to the customer," said Purkiss.

The new partners say they will continue run their business when they both return back to school in the fall. Their immediate plan is trying to expand their business, hire some employees, and look for an office.
